Cell Types of Mesothelioma

A patient’s “pathology” report, which is the report from the laboratory diagnosing the mesothelioma, might note the “cell type” of the disease. The cell type of mesothelioma refers to the type of tissue where the cancer first developed. This information is very helpful to doctors when making decisions about the patient’s treatment options. “Epithelial” cells refer to the cells that develop in the epithelium, which is the membrane lining of the lung, heart, or abdomen.

“Sarcomatous” mesothelioma arises in the connective tissue. “Biphasic” refers to malignant mesothelioma arising in two different cell types. “Desmoplastic” is another cell type of mesothelioma.
