DePuy Hip Replacement Implants

Johnson & Johnson recently recalled two hip replacement products manufactured by subsidiary DePuy Orthopaedics based on new data that about one in eight patients who had the product implanted need a “revisionist” surgery after using one of the products. The second surgery is usually required when an artificial joint doesn’t fit properly, causing pain and difficulty walking, and can cost patients additional money for potentially unneeded surgery. The data also warns that about 12 percent of people getting the resurfacing system and about 13 percent of those getting the acetabular system needed corrective surgery within five years.

Both products are used to replace a worn or weakened part of the hip, which includes a socket at the outer edge of the pelvis and a rounded bone on top of the thigh bone that fits into the socket like a ball.

What Products Were Recalled?

ASR Hip Resurfacing System: Replaces the ball portion of the hip and has a metal stem that fits into the top of the hip bone or femur

ASR XL Acetabular System: Concave metal piece used to provide a smooth lining for the bowl-shaped socket in the pelvis called the acetabulum

What Should I Do If I Had One of the Products Implanted?

If you have had intense lower-body pain or difficulty walking, contact your doctor immediately. He or she should be able to advise you as to the cause of the pain and whether corrective surgery is needed.

Having a Second Surgery is Expensive, How Can I Pay for It?

Baron & Budd is ready to fight on your behalf for the compensation you need to pay your medical bills. Though DePuy Orthopaedics has agreed to help patients with paying for the cost of doctor visits, tests and procedures associated with the recall, Baron & Budd will work with you and DePuy to obtain the compensation you need to cover your costs.

If you have suffered adverse health effects from the ASR Hip Resurfacing System or the ASR XL Acetabular System or have been forced to undergo a second hip replacement surgery, call us at 1.866.844.4556 to discuss a possible claim.
