What is California Proposition 65?

In 1986, the state of California passed the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act, which is commonly known as Proposition 65 or simply “Prop 65.” Prop 65 is a right-to-know law that requires companies to inform California consumers about potential exposure to certain toxic chemicals by placing warning labels on products.

Our Work on Prop 65

Since Prop 65 is enforced through lawsuits, it is the responsibility of firms like Baron and Budd to hold companies accountable when they are violating the law. The firm frequently works with California-based non-profit organizations to help enforce Prop 65 and ultimately protect consumers from potential toxic exposure.

Currently, firm shareholder and head of firm’s Prop 65 litigation section Laura Baughman is working on a Prop 65 case regarding elevated levels of lead in children’s foods and drinks with the California non-profit Enviromental Law Foundation (ELF).

Baughman previously took on another Prop 65 case to protect children from exposure to harmful diesel exhaust.
