Kevin Colquitt is an attorney in Baron & Budd’s Qui Tam litigation section, where he works with whistleblowers who come forward to expose fraud against the government.
While many people have personal reasons for choosing to become an attorney and for choosing a particular area of law, Kevin’s history makes him especially well-suited for working with whistleblowers who are trying to do the right thing.
Before attending law school, Kevin was a medical device salesman. But when his infant daughter needed special medical care that his insurance company refused to cover, Kevin and his wife felt helpless. They called, wrote letters, filed an appeal, and still couldn’t get help for their baby girl. But when Kevin called on a friend who was an attorney, a single letter from that friend to the insurance company’s medical director changed the company’s position. Kevin believes his friend’s intervention may have saved his daughter’s life, and he wanted to be able to provide that kind of help to others who needed it as he had.
While in law school, Kevin himself filed a whistleblower lawsuit under the False Claims Act. He devoted himself to studying Qui Tam law, but he also learned what the law means from the inside in his role as a “relator”—or whistleblower.
“What I really grew to understand is how important it can be as a whistleblower to have someone to talk to about the lawsuit and what you’re feeling,” says Kevin. “It can be isolating to go through this, but I know what whistleblowers are feeling because I’ve been there, too.”
Kevin knew that he was committed to this work, and he was excited about joining Baron & Budd when he returned to Dallas after law school. He says that tackling the complicated facts and legal issues that are raised by Qui Tam litigation has been intellectually stimulating and professionally satisfying. “But most importantly,” Kevin says, “I get to come into work every day knowing that I am helping regular people combat fraud against the federal and state governments. It just doesn’t get much better than that.”
